Canon Updates Rebel D-SLR

Canon Updates Rebel D-SLR

The Canon EOS Rebel XS replaces the Rebel XT, and includes a resolution bump and a live-view LCD.

Canon on Tuesday announced yet another addition to its entry-level D-SLR lineup, the EOS Rebel XS, which in combination with the EOS Rebel XSi (announced in January), will replace the EOS Rebel XT and Rebel XTi.

Canon EOS Rebel XS

The new XS has some minor upgrades from the XT, including a 2.5-inch LCD (up from 1.8), a resolution bump from 8 megapixels to 10, and the XSi's Live View feature—the ability to view a shot through the LCD rather than the optical viewfinder. The camera also includes a 7-point autofocus system and an unlimited burst rate of 3fps. The XS implements the new Digic III processor and boasts improved battery life.

First-time photogs will benefit from a prebundled kit that includes the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, an image-stabilization lens that will help substantially reduce image blur.

While Canon announced the XS today in Japan, we'll have to wait until July for the official U.S. launch. And while pricing is not yet set, according to Canon, the XS will be in the same price range as the XTi (currently $630 to $740 street). The Rebel XS will likely be a nice alternative for those who don't want to go too high-end in a D-SLR or shell out for the XSi.
