Datalogic says it is now shipping a rugged PDA featuring Windows CE 5.0 or 6.0 operating systems, along with optional GSM/GPRS/EDGE communications. The Pegaso withstands five-foot drops and offers a full VGA display, integrated barcode scanner, wireless local area networking, and optional dock.

Like most similar devices, the Pegaso targets applications such as inventory control, price verification, and field force automation. It has a 3.6-inch VGA (640 x 480) display that can also be operated in QVGA (320 x 240) mode if desired, plus 19 backlit keys and a four-way navigation controller. The device can withstand multiple five-foot drops to concrete, claims Datalogic.
A barcode scanner is integral to the Pegaso, which is also available with an optional magnetic stripe reader (MSR). A SDIO (secure digital input output) port is located behind a flap (shown at right) on the top of the PDA, allowing either SD memory or peripherals such as RFID readers to be added.
Wireless interfaces on the Pegaso are provided via optional modules. Modules are available for GSM/GPRS/EDGE wide area connectivity, Bluetooth 1.2, and 802.11b/g wireless networking. Datalogic promotes the last of these as being newly compatible with Cisco's CCX (Cisco Compatible Extensions), version 4, said to add extra security and ensure compliance with the PCI DSS (payment card industry data security standard).
As for its basic computing capabilities, the Pegaso uses a 520MHz Marvell PXA270 processor, with 64MB or 128MB of RAM, and 128MB of flash storage. The operating system can be either Windows CE 5.0 or Windows CE 6.0.
A 3300mAh extended-capacity battery is featured, helping account for the device's 16.9-ounce weight. Optionally, Datalogic offers a charger that can replenish four Pegaso batteries at once, or a dock that has two charging slots -- one for the PDA itself, and one for a spare battery pack. This dock additionally provides USB host and client connectors.
